DAY 1: Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar (NM)

A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes us to the “Spice Island,” where we have the option to spend the next 3 nights. Zanzibar is steeped in history and was one of the major starting points for most East African explorers in their quest for new lands. New passengers may join us to replace those that’ll leave us at the end of our excursion to Zanzibar.

PLEASE NOTE: Accommodation and Meals are for your own account whilst on Zanzibar, as it is our experience that passengers prefer to explore the island on their own, and in accordance with their own budget. The Trip Leader joins you and can arrange your accommodation, while meals can be enjoyed from a wide selection of restaurants. There are also a wide variety of optional excursions on offer – please see the price guide on the end of this document for more details.

For those not opting to visit the island of Zanzibar, the next 3 days are spent at leisure at the beach campsite in Dar es Salaam. There are various optional excursions available from the camp including diving, snorkelling and fishing trips. The driver and cook remain behind in Dar es Salaam during the excursion.

DAYS 2 & 3: Zanzibar

History aside, Zanzibar offers a wealth of experiences for the visitor. Today the quiet streets of the old Stone Town still retain their Arabic influence, from the Medina-like shops to the palaces of the Sultans, who founded their vast empires on the spoils of the slave and ivory trade. The island is famous for its spices and an excursion around a spice plantation is always a fascinating experience. Other options include a trip to the beautiful beaches and giant tortoises of Prison Island, a full day scuba dive in Nungwe or a fishing trip in a traditional dhow. Mopeds are available for hire if you’d like to explore the more remote areas of the island. Zanzibar is a seafood lover’s paradise. Numerous restaurants offer a great variety of the freshest catch from the ocean – crayfish being a popular speciality. Alternatively, mingle with the locals for dinner at the Forodhani Gardens seafront market, where delicious, inexpensive seafood is on offer.

DAY 4: Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (D)

Leaving Zanzibar in the afternoon, we return to the mainland and another night in Dar es Salaam. Arrival back to camp is usually in the late afternoon, or early evening.

DAY 5: Dar es Salaam to Iringa (B / L / D)

This morning we leave Dar es Salaam and head south. We pass through the Mikumi National Park where it is possible to view a range of wildlife from the roadside, totally impervious to the passing traffic. We travel towards Iringa where we spend the night in a beautiful rustic campsite famous for its Amarula Hot Chocolates and its steamy showers!

DAYS 6 to9: Iringa to Lake Malawi (Malawi) (B / L / D)

Winding our way through the beauty of the Tukuyu tea and banana plantations, we head towards Malawi entering the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ through the border post at Songwe.

Malawi is a landlocked country with 20% of its total area made up of beautiful Lake Malawi. We travel the length of the western side of the lake, stopping off at various bays and inlets over the next 4 days.

Spend the days learning the game of bao from the locals, scour the markets for a bargain or simply relax on the pristine beaches. Malawi’s temperate climate allows for swimming in the clear blue fresh-water lake all year round. Explore the beautiful shore where you’ll happen upon the local fishermen sorting their catch. Traditional fishing techniques are still practiced and to appreciate their boating skills, try to paddle a dugout canoe yourself! At night you’ll see the ‘fairy’ lights of the fishermen out on the lake. The various beachside campsites along Lake Malawi’s shores offer many optional Excursions including a variety of water sports, horseback rides and a visit to the local village and school (see pricing guide at the end of this document).

DAY 10: Lake Malawi to Chipata (Zambia) (B / L / D)

We head away from Lake Malawi, and stop off in the capital, Lilongwe, a small city distinctively divided into the old town and the new administrative centre, to stock up on supplies before crossing into Zambia where we spend the night in a beautiful little campsite just 10 km after the Malawi/Zambia border.

DAY 11: Chipata to Lusaka (B / L / D)

From Chipata, we head south-west via the Great East Road to our campsite on the outskirts of Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka. While today is mostly spent driving, we do cross the impressive Luangwa River Bridge which is heavily guarded due to its close proximity to the Zimbabwean & Malawian borders. We also pass through a few of the villages and towns of Zambia along the way. Prosperous during the copper boom in the 60’s, Zambia was able to build infrastructure at the main mining and farming communities. After the fall of the copper industry, the country was left virtually bankrupt and existing infrastructure was left to fall to ruin. Due to foreign investment and a rise in the mining industry, Zambia is today once again starting to prosper. The difference is evident in the cities with the availability of foreign stores, banks and imported cars, while the villages and smaller towns are still to catch up. Our campsite is home to some local wildlife including the largest antelope – Eland.

DAY 12: Lusaka to Livingstone (B / L / D)

Heading further south, we journey through the southern Zambian towns mostly supporting local agriculture and farming on our way to Livingstone. The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and it’s not difficult to see why. At 1700 m wide and around 100 m high, this is the world’s largest sheet of falling water and a memorable sight on any African Safari! The Falls can be viewed from the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia – a fantastic photo opportunity. Tonight we have the option of enjoying a sunset dinner cruise on the mighty Zambezi.

DAY 13: Livingstone to Chobe National Park (Botswana) (B / L / D)

We leave Zambia and cross the border into Botswana at the Kazangula Ferry. Once we’ve completed the border formalities, we continue to the town of Kasane, situated on the banks of the Chobe River. The Chobe River forms a border between Botswana and Namibia and Zambia and is the main water source to the Chobe National Park. After lunch, we take a boat cruise along the Chobe River. Once we return and are packed and prepared, we leave for our Chobe National Park Overnight Mobile excursion – an overnight experience in the wilds of the Chobe National park. Chobe is one of Botswana’s premier game parks, renowned for its large elephant herds. Spend the afternoon in search of wildlife while we game drive to our camp within the park where we spend the evening surrounded by the night-time noises of the local wildlife. Look out for the rare Sable and Roan Antelope on your game drive, with their majestic backward slanting horns, or try keep a count of the Lilac Breasted Roller’s that swoop by! After our night in the bush, we head out early to continue our search for wildlife, before packing up the camp and heading back to Kasane.

DAY 14: Chobe National Park to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) (Brunch)

Once returning to camp, we get back on our truck and continue to the border of Zimbabwe. Once we’ve completed border formalities, we have a short drive to the nearby Victoria Falls. Named after the famous World Heritage site and Water Falls, the town of Victoria Falls is situated on the Zambezi River and surrounded by the Victoria Falls National Park. Our campsite is conveniently situated in the centre of town, and within walking distance of the adventure booking agents, restaurants and shops. A 20 minute walk down the main road takes you to the entry point to view the falls, which are situated between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders), was named by David Livingstone on his explorations, and is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1700 m wide and around 100 m high, this is the world’s largest sheet of falling water and a memorable sight on any African Safari! After our adventure activities briefing (see price guide at the end of this document for options), the afternoon is spent relaxing at the campsite’s swimming pool, viewing the Victoria Falls, or exploring the many sights and delights of this town!

DAY 15: Victoria Falls (B)

After breakfast, we exchange addresses and part ways, having just experienced a trip of a lifetime! We suggest booking additional days after your trip to take advantage of the optional excursions available at Victoria Falls.

OPTIONAL Excursions include elephant back safaris, horseback safaris, walking with lions, a visit to the crocodile ranch, boat cruises and golf at The Elephant Hills Resort. Adrenalin junkies can bungee from the Victoria Falls Bridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia or abseil down the Batoka Gorge – neither activity is for the faint hearted! All year round, flights in fixed wing, micro light and ultra light aircraft or helicopters provide an aerial perspective over this magnificent World Heritage Site. White water rafting on the Zambezi is world class. Beside the excitement of the Grade 5 rapids, there are the “floats,” where there is time to admire the scenic cliffs and the occasional wildlife on the riverbanks.

Im going to Kenya on June, will I be safe or shall I reconsider my trip to Kenya because of the recent situatio

I arrive to Kenya on June 26 and from Nairobi I start a Safari ending in South Africa, do you think the actual situation in Kenya will settle down by that date? Or should I reconsider my trip to Kenya and instead of start the trip in Kenya start it in Tanzania?
Thank you very much for your advice.

Juan answers:

Of course one never knows if things will calm down in a country or spiral out of control. No one thought that Kenya would ever see this kind of tribal violence and yet now it is here. Having said that, the violence is limited in scope and to places where as a tourist you wouldn’t be going anywhere near.

Keep paying attention to the situation, but you should be fine. The link below is a good site to check periodically, although sometimes they do get a bit alarmist.

Kenya and South Africa are truly beautiful, enjoy it and have a great time.

Juan answers:

You do not *HAVE* to wear safari clothes and usually only rich Americans get kitted out in the highest quality and can be recognised a mile off ! LOL

It is however important to wear comfortable, loosish fitting clothing befitting a safari. No bright colours. Choose light absorbant cottons, trousers, suitable walking shoes/boots and socks and a hat to help keep the sun off. Take plenty of layers, from lightweight Tees and shorts, to longsleeves at night to protect against biting insects, and warmer coats and jackets at as it will be cold at night. You will start your safari drives with several layers than you can peel off as the sun gets hot and put back on as it cools down.
#
Enjoy.

Day 1 Amboseli National Park

We depart Nairobi take the drive south to the Amboseli National Park. Famed as one of the best places to see free-ranging Elephants the park also boasts a magnificent view of Mt Kilimanjaro on clear days. Predominantly a community run enterprise there will also be opportunity to meet the local people of this area.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Campsite close to NP Entrance: www.kws.org/parks/parks_reserves/AMNP.html

Day 2 Tanzania – Arusha

After a wonderful morning’s game drive in Amboseli NP we will cross over the border at Namanga and enter Tanzania. From there we travel to Tanzania’s safari-hub town of Arusha.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Meserani Camp: www.meseranisnakepark.com/snake-park-campsite.html

Day 3 Tarangire NP

Around 120km southwest of Arusha lies Tarangire NP, at only 2850 km² it is Tanzania’s 6th largest National Park and most famous for the large numbers Elephant, Baobab Trees and the elusive tree-climbing Lions and African Pythons. In the afternoon we enjoy a game drive before setting up camp just outside the park for another evening under the vast African sky.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Campsite just outside NP: www.tanzaniaparks.com/tarangire.html

Day 4/5 Serengeti NP

At 14,763 km² the Serengeit NP is massive and although we will spend 2 whole days traversing the larger and smaller roads through the park, we will still only see a fraction of the area. Serengeti is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife areas and its reputation for excellent game viewing is well deserved. As well as being home to The Big 5 (Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino) the sheer seasonal numbers of plains game such as Zebra and Wildebeest are often more memorable. It is possible to book the optional Balloon Safari on the morning of the second day in the Serengeti, but this activity has to be pre-booked in advance. Optional Activities: Balloon Safari over the Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Campsite inside NP, we will choose best camp for season: http://www.tanzaniaparks.com/serengeti.html

Day 6 Ngorongoro Conservation Area

No visit to this part of the world would be complete without calling in at Olduvai Gorge, site of the Laetoli hominid footprints, Oldupai Museum and many fossilised hominid, animal and plant specimens. Four different types of hominid have been discovered here, with more than 60 remains comprising the archaeological record. A self-guided tour of the museum and a short lecture provides an excellent start to learning more about the history of hominids and other mammals. We will also visit a Masaai Boma in order to spend some time with these remarkable people who live side by side with the animals we have just seen in the Serengeti.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Simba Campsite: http://www.zara.co.tz/safaris/simba.htm

Day 7 Ngorongoro and Lake Eyasi

Although commonly referred to as The Ngorongoro Crater, it is actually a caldera. At over 20 km’s across and 600m deep the Ngorongoro Caldera is the largest unbroken, un-flooded caldera in the world and clear testimony to this region’s volcanic history. The ‘crater’ is the most renowned part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a unique area where more than 25 000 wild animals occupy the crater-floor; we will spend our entire morning game viewing here. In the afternoon we will travel to Lake Eyasi, home to some of East Africa’s last hunter-gather tribes, the Hadzabe, who have lived in this area for over 10 000 years.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Kisima Ngeda Lodge Camp: www.kisimangeda.com

Day 8 Lake Eyasi Hadzabe Hunting Tour

This morning we experience a unique way of life when we meet with the Hazabe people of the Lake Eyasi area. Numbering at only around 1000, only 300-400 members of this tribe still live the traditional hunter-gather life. Traditionally considered to be the East African branch of the Khoisan people (their language also uses click-sounds), modern genetic research has suggested the Hazabe may be more closely related to the Pygmies! In the afternoon we journey to Mto wa Mbu (pronounced ‘umto wambu’) where we overnight close to the village.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Overnight: Camp near village: No website available

Day 9 Mto wa Mbu

Do not be scared off by the translation of the name Mto wa Mbu, it means River of Mosquitoes, but is far better known as the place where, it is said, you can find members of 120 different tribes. We will be taking a guided walk through the village and surrounding areas including a visit to a Chagga Banana Beer brewery, where you can sample the local brew. We will also visit some small handicraft stalls of the Makonde people. After a traditional lunch we will drive back to Arusha where your tour ends.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Gold Reef City is a large amusement park in Johannesburg, South Africa. Located on an old gold mine, the park is themed around the gold rush on the Witwatersrand. Park staff wear period costumes of the 1880s, and the buildings on the park are designed to mimic the same period. There is a museum dedicated to gold mining on the grounds where it is possible to see a gold-containing ore vein and see how real gold is poured into barrels.

There are many attractions at Gold Reef City, not the least of which are water rides and roller coasters. The liveshows of Idols South Africa are filmed live in the “Hippodrome”, a large auditorium based in the park.

Gold Reef City is located to the south of the Central Business District off of the M1. It is also the site of the Apartheid Museu

There are numerous rides ranging from log flume rides to an inverted coaster. Some of the popular rides at the theme park include:

Vaccination costs for travel to Africa?

Hey guys, so I’m looking into some volunteer programs in Africa. Something I’ve wanted to do for a while and this seems to be the most cost-effective way of going about it. I had some friends who went to Africa a while back, and I know they spent quite a bit on vaccinations. I was just wondering if anyone knows first hand how much it will cost and what sorts of vaccinations are required.

Not sure if any of this matters, but I am American, male and 26-years-old. Any information would help. Thanks.

1. Malaria – This is the most feared disease to most of the visitors. Make sure that before you travel you visit your doctor to get ant-malaria tablets. Also you can buy mosquito sprays. But note that most of the accommodation you will use have treated mosquito nets

2. The yellow-fever vaccination is no longer officially required when entering Tanzania, yet because the disease is endemic many doctors will recommend it as a precaution. Other vaccinations that might be considered before you travel include typhoid, hepatitis A and B, meningitis, and tetanus.

Finally your doctor will be in a good position to advice you well on vaccinations and their related costs and other precautions to take about your health before coming to African country like Tanzania.

All the best.

Juan answers:

Recommended Vaccinations and Preventive Medications

The following vaccines may be recommended for your travel to Tropical South America. Discuss your travel plans and personal health with a health-care provider to determine which vaccines you will need.

Hepatitis A or immune globulin (IG). Transmission of hepatitis A virus can occur through direct person-to-person contact; through exposure to contaminated water, ice, or shellfish harvested in contaminated water; or from fruits, vegetables, or other foods that are eaten uncooked and that were contaminated during harvesting or subsequent handling.
Hepatitis B, especially if you might be exposed to blood or body fluids (for example, health-care workers), have sexual contact with the local population, or be exposed through medical treatment. Hepatitis B vaccine is now recommended for all infants and for children ages 11–12 years who did not receive the series as infants.
Malaria: your risk of malaria may be high in these countries, including some cities. See your health care provider for a prescription antimalarial drug. For details concerning risk and preventive medications, see Malaria Information for Travelers to Tropical South America.
Rabies, if you might have extensive unprotected outdoor exposure in rural areas, such as might occur during camping, hiking, or bicycling, or engaging in certain occupational activities.
Typhoid vaccine. Typhoid fever can be contracted through contaminated drinking water or food, or by eating food or drinking beverages that have been handled by a person who is infected. Large outbreaks are most often related to fecal contamination of water supplies or foods sold by street vendors.
Yellow fever, a viral disease that occurs primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America, is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus is also present in Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for travelers to endemic areas and may be required to cross certain international borders (For country specific requirements, see Yellow Fever Vaccine Requirements and Information on Malaria Risk and Prophylaxis, by Country.). Vaccination should be given 10 days before travel and at 10 year intervals if there is on-going risk.
As needed, booster doses for tetanus-diphtheria and measles.

Required Vaccinations
Yellow fever is present in this region and vaccination is recommended if you travel to the endemic zones in any of these countries. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination may be required for entry into certain countries if you have visited an endemic area. For detailed information, see Comprehensive Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirements. Also, find the nearest authorized U.S. Yellow fever vaccine center.

Most of the budget packages that you can take revolve around operations that run “truck tours” throughout Africa. They run the truck tours and usually also have optional spin-off options for more extensive safaris, etc. In the areas they go. Some of the more well known of the budget operators are GAP adventures, Intrepid, and Gecko’s Adventures. Then there is a whole host of UK-owned operators like Nomads, Exodus, Dragoman, Oasis Overland, African Trails, Nomadic Travel, Kumuka, and others. Then there are agencies like Worlds Apart Travel which kind of act like Orbitz and other airline/hotel booking websites. You contact them with your priorities, dates, budget, etc. And they recommend different itineraries that they think might work well for you. You book with them and they contract out with other agencies like the ones mentioned above. As far as Kenya goes, one of the most economical ways to go would be to book a room with the budget but decent Terminal Hotel in downtown Nairobi and have them arrange your Kenya travel for you. I had already arranged my travel (with GAP Adventures) when I showed up at their hotel, but if I could do it over again, I’d think about using their services as their prices were definitely right. A note on the Terminal Hotel. My wife and I were just fine there, but it really is a budget operation. Also, a bar downstairs can be noisy at night. The quietest rooms are 106, 107, 206, 207, and ones on the 3rd floor that I forgot to write down but I think are 308, 309, 310, and 311. But I’m not sure about that. It was 1900 Kenyan Shillings/night (US$ 24) when we were there. Have a great time in Africa.

Where in Europe is cheap but FUN for a holiday?

6 of us are looking to rent a villa for a week either at the end of June or during August sometime. We’re not particularly bothered about being in a clubbing type location.. a bar/club or two is all we’re really bothered about. Stuff like quad biking would be a huge bonus.. or things that you’ve always fancied doing but are either overpriced in this country or few and far between (bungee jumping, sky diving?). I’d prefer spending my money on stuff like this as opposed to getting monged and being hungover all day, and the more options/less money it costs, the better!

When I went to turkey years ago I had an amazing time.. it was cheap, everyone was friendly, food was nice and they seemed to offer a range of things such as microlites, safaris (well, missioning around the mountains and terrain in a 4×4) etc all within close proximity of one another.

The go-to location is obviously Spain because everyone knows it’s cheap, hot and you kinda know what you’re getting with Spain but I’ve been to various parts about 7 times since being a little kid and all the memories seem very similar.
