Introduction to Backpackers in Johannesburg
Backpacking in Johannesburg, to do or not to do. That is the question that all the people ask when thy come to Johannesburg. There is mayor concerns over safety and security and in general Johannesburg has a very bad reputation worldwide, that could be true in certain places in Johannesburg, but then again Johannesburgis big, its has a estimated population of 3225812 people in 2001 (as per wipekedia) now that is excluding all the immigrants from Botswana,Zimbabwe,Mozambique etc. So you have backpackers scattered all over Johannesburg, some is in the city center, some is in Kempton park, Edenvale,Boksburg and Benoni. The most of the Johannesburg backpackers is situated in suburbs of Johannesburg around Johannesburg. So is it safe? well that depends on what you do and more on were you do it. If you go to hilbrow in the night with a camera swung around your neck, and a wallet full of money, that would definitely not be safe. But if you go for example to eastrand mall in the day you will be perfectly fine, providing that you don’t do uneducated things. Johannesburg and backpacking in Johannesburg is like any other city in the world when it comes to backpacking, if you go with a trustworthy company to the city center you will be fine,if you take a local taxi or minibus to the city center, well then you take your Chance’s. In short all the suburbs around the city center is fine, its like any other upcoming world city, but you have to keep in mind on were you going and especially who you are going with. I have been backpackingin Southern Africa now for the last 12 years,I grew up in Benoni and we are living a normal life, there is a high security factor in all of South Africa, dogs electric, fences and security companies but at the end of the day is you take South Africa’s estimated 45 million people then its all in perspective. So there is a lot to do for backpackers in Johannesburg, but you cant compare it with cape town. There will be a breakdown of activities of what to do in Johannesburgand this blog about backpacking in Johannesburgwill be updated frequently.

Top 3 Cities In South Africa
While South Africa is dotted with a number of urban centers, there can be little doubt that the top three SA cities are Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.
Each of these cities has a unique character that draws different types of people.
See which one appeals the most to you!
Johannesburg / Jo'burg / Jozi
For young, vibey, fast-paced living.
The pulsing city with a heart of pure gold, Johannesburg is known as Egoli (place of gold), Jo'burg, and today also carries the trendy name of Jozi.
A relatively young city, Jo'burg traces its modern history back to 1886 when it sprang up as a gold-rush shanty town.
Today this thriving bustling city is the most densely populated South African city, home to 3 225 800 people and growing.
Jo'burg has a pleasant balmy climate for most of the year and is renowned for dramatic afternoon thunderstorms in summer. The nights can get pretty cool, especially in winter.
The city of Johannesburg has no mountains or coastline to shape it, and it is an enormous, sprawling urban jungle.
Some of the top attractions in and around Jo'burg include the Sterkfontein caves, the township of Soweto, The Apartheid Museum, the Mai Mai Herbalist market and Rosebank craft market.
Jo'burg is a shopper's paradise – there are numerous malls - and the Sandton area is particularly popular with shopaholics.
Durban - Durbs-by-the-Sea
Steaming hot, yet so damn cool!
The settlement of Port Natal only really started in 1823, although Vasco da Gama has ‘discovered' it back in 1497.
Most people equate Durban with a laid back, ‘chilled' atmosphere, and also with extremely humid heat, almost all year round. For many Durban is the place to live if you love to surf, but there is more to this city than awesome waves, golden beaches, sugar cane plantations and palm trees.
Durban lies in the heart of the Zulu kingdom, land of King Shaka, which gives the entire region a rich cultural history that can be felt just by walking through the hot streets. A large ‘Indian' community also calls Durban home, and these people add their own flavor to the city's effervescent, colorful population.
Durban offers great shopping at malls and markets, historical and cultural attractions and plenty for families to do. Perhaps the most well-known tourist spot is uShaka Marine World which boasts an aquarium, dolphinarium and snorkel reef, a world of water slides and marine-theme shopping.
Cape Town - The Mother City
Paradise found - between the mountains and the two oceans
Cape Town as an urban settlement began in the mid-1600's as a trading post for ships passing the tip of Africa en route to The East.
Today Cape Town is loved for its breathtaking natural beauty, with Table Mountain dominating the views from almost anywhere in the city. The beaches on both the Indian and Atlantic sides offer crystal blue waters, white sandy beaches and beautiful bodies all summer long.
From any of the chi-chi restaurants, cafes and wine-bars along the coastline you can even enjoy watching whales playing in the bay.
With numerous museums and art galleries, theatres and craft markets, Cape Town is undoubtedly the Culture Capital of SA. If the money is found in Jo'burg, the creativity springs from Cape Town's vibrant multi-cultural population.
Don't miss the top tourist attraction in the country - The Victoria and Albert Waterfront - a fabulous development on the foreshore which offers a world of entertainment and shopping.
A lot more laid back than Jozi, but more cosmopolitan than Durbs, Cape Town is the place to be for the arty, nature-loving yet trendy individual.
So which of these fantastic cities sounds like your perfect place to be? We suggest you don't restrict your self to just one - visit them all and enjoy the best of the South African urban experience!
Backpacking is a fun hobby and sport. It is both challenging and adventurous. And it appeals to young and old, male and female. It is something virtually anyone can take part in, and there are countless options on how and where to start. Backpacking is a great way to get exercise and have fun at the same time. Read on to learn more about what backpacking is all about.
Backpacking is the combination of hiking and camping. Backpacking trips involve hiking through wilderness areas and camping overnight. As the name implies, backpackers carry everything they need on their back. A backpacking trip can last one night or multiple nights. The longer the trip the more that must be packed and carried, so planning is essential. Some areas that are very popular backpacking destinations will have camp sites set up. These sites may be as simple as a fire ring and posted maps, or they can be luxurious and offer cabins. Many other areas may provide nothing at all for backpackers, and here you will set up camp wherever you find a good spot.
There is a community in backpacking. Everyone works together to preserve the wilderness that they love. There are certain accepted and unaccepted behaviors in backpacking. Backpackers try not to disturb or damage the area they travel in. They clean up all traces of their camp and never litter or take anything along their travels.
For all backpackers, safety is the first consideration and it must be in front of the mind at all times. There can be several hazards in backpacking and a person who does not think about being safe could fall prey. The backpack itself can pose problems if a person does not learn how to fit it and pack it properly. The physical activity can be strenuous and a person must be conditioned to handle walking through uneven and rough terrain. First aid and general wilderness safety is another useful aspect for the backpacker to know. It can be easy to get lost in the wilderness, and getting hurt can happen. So it pays every backpacker to have a good handle on staying safe.
People backpack for different reasons. Some do it for the great exercise, which it is undoubtedly is. Some people like backpacking because of the adventure and love of nature. Others backpack as a way to learn and explore the outdoors. Whatever the reason, there are large and expanding numbers of backpackers. They explore and they love the wilderness, and have the common goal of a getting a good backpacking experience which can provide memories that last a lifetime.
South Africa spices up your Romantic side with a Romantic Getaway. In today’s fast paced society, we seem to work, eat, sleep and repeat. The rat race has many of us in this routine and a getaway is so dearly needed by most. But when you are in a relationship and the stresses of everyday life take their toll, the best getaways are the unforgettable romantic ones. South Africa has so much diverse culture and hot spots for couples to explore. The country has incredible art galleries, offers the finest in theater and theatrical productions, has one of the world’s most thriving industries concerning safari and wildlife and has a rich and diverse history marked by wars for land, civil rights and freedom. A wonderful getaway for any couple is a self driven tour throughout the sights of the rainbow nation. The perfect place to begin would be in South Africa’s largest city: Johannesburg.
Start in the city of gold
The tour begins its first two days in a city with many activities available to a loving couple. The accommodation is a wide variety and includes many guest lodges, game lodges and five star hotels. The standard of service and hospitality is extremely high, perfect for the romantic couple wishing to be pampered. For two days in the City of Gold, the couple can enjoy theater at the many first rate play houses and theaters showing famous productions and also new, local and intriguing productions. The art available in the city is of a similar standard: many famous art galleries are available for visiting. Due to the rich history of the country and the city being in the midst of some of the greatest accomplishments and downfalls in the country’s history, Johannesburg has wonderful museums to capture that history. As well as the cultural aspects of Johannesburg, there are also game parks reasonably close to the city encompassing some fantastic opportunities for romantic game drives and the best of treatment at their safari lodges and spas.
After two days in the city the tour moves on to Dundee in Kwa-Zulu Natal, a town steeped in the rich history of the arrival of explorers from the Northern Hemisphere, and the almighty attempt at stopping their infiltration by the local tribesmen. The town is reasonably central to the many battlefields surrounding such as Rorke’s Drift, Isandlwana, Blood River and Ladysmith. The town has a quaint elegance and is filled with historical buildings, museums and services offering tours and excursions to the famous battlefields. The Royal Country Inn is a wonderful hotel which was established four years after the town was founded in 1886 and is very well preserved. Other accommodation offered is B&B’s, guest houses, guest farms and so on. The tours to the battlefield give a feeling of achievement over past troubles, but also the cold frankness of man’s mortality.
History, art, theatre, wildlife: always nicer as a couple
Two days are spent in Dundee exploring the battlefields, museums and exhibitions, after which the tour heads for St Lucia. St Lucia is a wetlands area in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal in an area known as Zululand and has an incredible variety of wildlife and flora to discover. It is situated in the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park, South Africa’s first world heritage site. Take a boat cruise through the wetlands, have a safari at Phinda Game Lodge and swim in the sea at Cape Vidal. The area seems almost tropical and is lush and green. The area is fantastic for nature walks and romantic sunset strolls through the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park. The area has hotels, guest houses, guest farms, hotels, self catering and B&B’s. After two days of nature at its finest and romance at its most poignant, it is time to move on to the next destination.
The tour spends one night in Sodwana Bay, also part of the world heritage site, yet further north than St Lucia. The area is the closest beach to Johannesburg and was popular with ivory hunters due to the animals coming to the sea as the only available water source nearby. The area is now famous for snorkeling and scuba diving as well as offshore fishing. There is also the reserve to explore and all these activities are perfect for a fun seeking, leisure loving couple. The accommodation available is self catering, resorts, hotels and guest houses, plus the area has the largest open campsite in the Southern Hemisphere. After one night in Sodwana Bay, the tour heads for Mbabane.
Across the borders
Mbabane is the capital City of Swaziland, so do not forget your passport as you need it to cross the border! Mbabane is a very cultural and thriving hub of activity. There is the Swazi Plaza and the Mall where the main banks, shops, restaurants and other interesting finds are situated. The accommodation available is up market hotels or the most basic self catering but this is still very comfortable. The activities surrounding Mbabane are obviously concerning the Mall and Swazi Plaza, but there are also game reserves, hikes, walks, game drives, arts and crafts and much more. The tour spends two days and nights in Mbabane after which it heads off to Hazyview.
Hazyview is situated just outside the Kruger National Park and has many geological wonders on its doorstep. The town is extremely young: it was only founded in 1959 but has a thriving community which is extremely involved in the tourism involved in the Kruger Park. The town has many luxury hotels, resorts, guest houses, guest lodges, game lodges, and hostels: most types of accommodation. The available activities are perfect for a romantic getaway: the Kruger is a stone’s throw away and it is a place where some of the best game drives, bird watching and star gazing occur – something extremely romantic for a couple’s getaway.
Into the wilderness
After spending two days in Hazyview and the Kruger, the tour heads for its final destination: the Olifants Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park. The Kruger National Park is known as the diamond of Africa, thus it is the perfect spot to enjoy two nights and two days with your loved one in the romantic bush. Olifants Rest Camp is positioned at the top of a hill and offers many exciting activities including Game Drives, star gazing, game walks, mountain bike trails, bush braais and much more. The accommodation available in the camp is park’s accommodation, camping, game lodges and self catering. The tour ends at Olifants Rest Camp on the 14th day.
As the gateway to South Africa for many, it's hard to imagine a luxury holiday to South Africa without some time spent in Johannesburg. Rather than just spending one night in the city, why not spend an extra day uncovering some of the key attractions before heading off on a tailor made South Africa holiday?
Johannesburg is a city which mixes a fascinating cultural heritage with many modern attractions suitable for people of all ages, with all kinds of interests. In order to show exactly how diverse Johannesburg's attractions are, here's a selection of 10 varied things you can expect to do in the city before embarking on the main part of your luxury holiday in South Africa:
Spend an afternoon on the greens
Sure, golf is not for everyone, but for those who like nothing more than to spend an afternoon on the greens, Johannesburg is amongst the best cities in the world. Not only does it have the perfect warm climate for strolling across the fairways, but the fairways themselves are some of the very best in Africa - indeed, 36 of the top 100 golf courses in South Africa are right here! Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a keen amateur, golf is one of the strongest attractions in Johannesburg.
Take a flutter at the casinos
Holiday gambling is a favourite of many tourists - even those who never so much as buy a scratch card when in the UK find the relaxed atmosphere of a luxury holiday in South Africa the perfect time to take a flutter, and Johannesburg is very well suited to these types. You'll struggle to find this density of casinos outside of Las Vegas, with two large ones in the city centre, another couple on the outskirts and a handful within 2 hours drive of the city! Between them all, you can find over 8000 slot machines and 300 tables - just make sure you know when to stop!
Gold Reef City - much more than a theme park...
One of these casinos is at Gold Reef City, but the good news is that there's plenty for children to do as well, while you're trying to beat the house at cards. Gold Reef City is a really rather splendid theme park with a fine selection of white knuckle rides, plentiful refreshment stands and even a brand new 4D theatre!
Learn more about the end of apartheid
The Apartheid museum has become a must see attraction in Johannesburg for its unflinching look at this distressing period of the country's history. It's extremely powerful, and includes such moving exhibits as blown up photos of passbooks, metal cages and screens showing replays of apartheid scenes. It pulls no punches: from the plastic entry ticket which either marks you as white or non-white to the recording studio where museum visitors have chronicled their own experiences, it's a harrowing trip but one well worth taking. The overall feeling is one of relief that the country's segregation is in the museum where it belongs.
Absorb the culture of Museum Africa
Culture vultures will get a lot out of Museum Africa, tucked into the Newtown Central Precinct. As the name implies, the main focus of the museum is on the continent's fascinating history, including an honest look at some of South Africa's problems and less proud moments. It's surprisingly modern too, and one of its most engaging attractions is an audio/visual display showing Nelson Mandela's trial for treason.
Tear up the track
From culture to go-karts, there are few things that can match the adrenalin of taking to the go kart course in Johannesburg. Decked out in safety clothing and helmet, visitors are encouraged to put their driving skills to the test in front of a crowd of onlookers. Not to everyone's tastes, certainly - but the thrill seekers will love to make go karting part of their South Africa holiday experience!
Take a trip on the Vaal River
There are few better ways to take in the natural beauty of South Africa than a boat ride along the Vaal river. With the wind in your hair, good company and great food, a trip down the Vaal river is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable activities in Johannesburg, and a must for South Africa's luxury holiday makers.
Lesedi Cultural Village
Lesedi Cultural Village is an attraction designed to help visitors understand the different cultures of South Africa. Holiday makers can walk around the five different homesteads (each representing a different culture from Pedi, Zulu, Zhosa, Basotho and Ndebele), take a tour to learn more about the culture - or even spend the night with one of the groups, for the true experience! Whichever option you take, visitors will learn of the cultural differences, and get to taste some delicious traditional cuisine. A must see attraction in Johannesburg.
Spend an unforgettable night clubbing
It's widely acknowledged that one of the main attractions of Johannesburg is its reputation as the party capital of the country! Visitors can expect an eclectic mix of live music and clubs with DJs who spin a mix of techno, trance, jungle and house music. Whether your taste is for small, intimate venues or huge warehouse style hotspots, the city has you covered!
Take a tour of the Soweto Township
This is the largest township in Gauteng with some four million people living within. It started as a settlement for people coming from the rural areas to find work, but has since grown to almost be considered a city in its own right. Highlights of the visit include the former homes of Nelson Mandela and various South African Nobel Prize winners, accompanied by the overall warmth and friendliness of the Soweto people.
There's plenty more I could list here, but this is a nice illustration of the sheer variety of attractions in Johannesburg - both famous and hidden. The city is the perfect gateway to a luxury holiday in South Africa.

So you are thinking about getting your scuba diving certification but aren't sure what it entails? We'll go through the details here.
Scuba diving is a wonderful sport and you will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. There's nothing like floating effortlessly underwater and seeing all the beautiful fish, coral, wrecks, etc. Certification will open up a whole new world for you.
First, let's start with the basics. What exactly is scuba diving certification?
In order to go scuba diving with any reputable dive shop, you must have a certification card (more commonly known as a c-card). You obtain this card by taking and passing a dive certification course. Once you pass this course, you receive your c-card and you are good to go.
The two main certification agencies are PADI and NAUI. Other agencies, such as YMCA and SSI, also offer scuba diving certification but NAUI and PADI are the most widely recognized.
The dive shop (or other entity) that you take your training from will be affiliated with one of these agencies. That is who you will receive your card from.
The most common scuba diving certification for recreational divers is the open water diver. Once you finish this course and pass the tests and dives, you receive your c-card. Once you receive your card, you are certified for life. There is no other mandatory training. There is other optional training you can do, but nothing more is required before you can start diving.
What are the requirements for taking a certification course?
As far as age goes, for PADI you must be 10 or older to take the course. Students younger than 15 will receive the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification. It can then be upgraded to PADI Open Water Diver certification upon reaching 15. For Naui, you must be 12 or older to take the course.
Basically you should be in good physical shape and be comfortable in the water. A clearance from your doctor would be a good idea if you have any doubts.
During the course you will have to be able to swim 200 yards. However, you can use any stroke and there is no time limit on how long it takes. You also have to tread water or float for 10 minutes. Again, you can use any methods you want.
The course itself can be broken into 4 major segments:
1. Book work
2. Exams
3. Pool training
4. Open water dives
The amount of time it takes to get our scuba diving certification depends on what avenue you take. There are intensive weekend courses where you can do all your book work and pool work in one weekend. This option usually involves advance reading. I think this could be a bit overwhelming if you have no prior experience but many people opt for this route.
At the opposite end are the options where you meet over the course of several weeks to do your book and pool work. This is the option I chose. The class met once a week for 6 weeks. The first part of the night involved the classroom (about 1 1/4 hours) followed by pool work (about 1 1/2 hours).
A recent introduction are the on-line certification courses which allows you to do the book portion of your scuba diving certification from anywhere.
You get a referral to do your open water dives after you successfully complete the book and pool work. Your open water dives are usually done in a lake, quarry or ocean. You typically do these dives over the course of 2 days. Certification usually requires 4 or 5 successful open water dives. You also have to do your open water dives within a certain amount of time of receiving your referral.
During your open water dives, you will perform the skills you learned in class for the instructor. This involves such skills as clearing your mask, buddy breathing, etc. Once you successfully pass the open water dives, you will receive your c-card.
As far as the cost of certification, prices for the course and pool work portion can range anywhere from around $150 to several hundred. I think $200-$250 is probably about average. If you take book portion online through PADI, the course currently costs $120 (you still have to pay for your in water training and open water dive portions).
Adding in the cost of your open water dives, the total cost of dive certification will probably be about $350-$450.
Hopefully I have answered most of your questions about getting certified. Give it a try, you won't regret it
What Is Scuba Diving?
Scuba is an acronym for "Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus". This originated from the term used for the US military re-breather sets, used by naval divers. It is independent breathing equipment, complete with an oxygen supply that allows divers to remain underwater for longer periods of time.
Who Can Be A Scuba Diver?
Working as a scuba diver is contrary to the regular nine to five office job. Anyone who has a penchant for diving can be a scuba diver. The following are points you need to take into consideration, before you decide on becoming a scuba diver:
Scuba Diving Is Used In The Following Jobs:
Underwater Construction - Scuba diving is used for underwater construction such as bridges, oil platforms, dams, docks, nuclear power plants and other coastal structures.
Underwater Archeology and Underwater Experiments - These jobs involve scientific inspection and survey - also known as scientific diving.
Military- The military uses scuba divers for naval ship construction and repair. They also include specialized diving divisions like combatant divers and explosives ordnance disposal.
Initially, scuba diving was intended only for scientific and military use. Now, it has become one of the most popular recreational water sports. Instead of pursuing scuba diving as a job, you can practice it as a hobby. You can use scuba diving skills for search and recovery, fish identification and underwater photography.
However, since scuba diving is a fairly dangerous sport, experts recommend taking the necessary lessons and certifications seriously before pursuing the sport as a hobby.
Requirements
An individual should not at least 15 years old to acquire the open water diver certification. They should be in good health and should be able to swim about 200 yards with any stroke, and tread or float on water for more than ten minutes.
Scuba Diving Certification
Scuba School International, PADI, YMCA, NAUI and PDIC are some of the biggest and most popular scuba diving certification agencies. They offer the best training instructors and scuba courses available. Junior Open Water Diver Certifications are also available for children between 10 and 15, by agencies such as SASY Scuba rangers and Bubble-makers.
Today, anyone who has a genuine interest and the required sound health can opt for scuba diving as a profession. It can turn out to be more of an adventure spree than a vocation. If that is what you have in mind, scuba diving is just the job for you. Go ahead and "dive in".

What is Kruger National Park?
Spanning over 2 million hectares, Kruger National Park is the biggest game reserve in South Africa and is the safari destination of choice for over a million visitors every year. Located in the north east of the South Africa, it was first established in 1926 to protect the animals in the reserve from poachers, hunters and cattle farmers. Set in untouched natural wilderness and teeming with wildlife, it's no surprise that Kruger National Park is renowned as one of the biggest and best natural game reserves in the world.
Why Go?
Kruger National Park safaris are massively popular; indeed, the park by a long way the favoured destination for safaris in South Africa. It's easy to see why - the park is an animal lover's dream come true. Kruger has large numbers of all of the 'Big 5' game animals (so called because they are the most challenging animals to hunt on foot): elephants, lions, buffalos, leopards and rhinos. Any Kruger National Park safari is likely to give you an excellent view of some of these rare and remarkable creatures, as well as many of the other animals that live in the park (including thousands of giraffe, hippopotami and zebra) and over 500 species of bird.
These animals live in a great variety of habitats throughout the park; scrubland, savanna, sandveld, bushveld plains, forests and thickets are all present in the game reserve. In addition to being one of the biggest and most diverse parks in the world, it also has a superbly maintained infrastructure for visitors on Kruger National Park safaris. Dozens of companies run tours into the park (including both driving and walking safaris), and a range of lodges and campsites are carefully spread through Kruger, providing plenty of places to stay while maintaining the untamed wilderness feel of the park. If you want to go on a South Africa safari, Kruger National Park offers the perfect blend of accessibility, natural wilderness and diverse wildlife.
Transport and Accommodation in Kruger Park
Kruger National Park safaris are typically conducted in 4x4s, which are up to the challenge of negotiating the tough terrain, and hire cars are available for those who want to travel independently through the park. If you do decide to go independently, make sure you read up on the rules of the park (the most important of these is also the easiest to remember - stay in your vehicle at all times!)
While day trips are available to Kruger, most people choose to stay in the park itself as part of their South Africa safaris. A huge range of accommodation is available, from basic campsites all the way up to exclusive luxury safari lodges. Many of these luxury lodges, including the Hoyo Hoyo Tsonga lodge, are designed in a traditional African style, and all of them offer luxury comfort in gorgeous wilderness surroundings. The lodges in Kruger provide the best accommodation available for safaris in South Africa, and are a highlight of many people's holidays.

Commonly known as the warm heart of Africa, Malawi has something to offer to all of its guests. It is one of the most attractive and beautiful countries in Africa, it is well-known among those who seek adventure, eco-tourism and leisure while holidaying.
The scenery of Malawi is diverse and elegant and the people of the country are extremely friendly with the tourists. The national parks, mountain hiking, game reserves and plateau trekking will be highly appreciated by those who love to be in the midst of nature.
Malawi is a favourite among tourists owing to its unbelievable scenery, great openings that it offers for trekking and hiking in the national parks and an opportunity to see the wildlife of Africa in its various game reserves.
The city of Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi and is well-renowned for the Old Town. It is home to quaint cafes, market stalls, restaurants and New City which is home to decorative shops and offices. The city is nestled in the Central African Mountains, plateau and hills, providing breath-taking panoramic views for the visitors.
The Lilongwe Nature Reserve is built in the area between the old and the new town in order to provide the visitors with an insight into what the area would have been like, before the beginning of the city construction. It is a sanctuary, not a city zoo, and people have to be as alert as in a forest, you may encounter a leopard or a hyena much to your shock.
Several small animals such as porcupine, serval, bushbabies, civet and squirrels and some larger animals such as bushbuck, bushpig and duicker can usually be spotted here. Around 165 km north of the city lies Kasungu National Park and 115 km north-east of the city lies the Nkhotokota Game Reserve.
Livingstonia Mission is one of the main tourist attractions located in the northern lakeshore region. It is situated in Khondowe, a small village, situated on the top of west Rift Valley. The scenery is spell-bounding, and the Manchewe Waterfall surrounded by the lush rain forest is the highest in Malawi.
Lake Malawi also known as Livingstone's Lake or Lake Nyassa, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malawi. It is the most southern lake situated in the Great Africa Rift Valley and is about 560 km long and has a total area of about 30,000km. The lake is bordered by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania and is a subject of dispute between Tanzania and Malawi.
The lake has the greatest number of indigenous fish species, more than any other lake in the world, thus making it popular among snorkellers and scuba divers. The beautiful blue waters and golden sandy beaches of the lake give retreat to those in need of a rest and a little relaxation. Kayaking, wind-sailing, water skiing and canoeing are water sports that are available for people who seek some fun and excitement.
Mulanje is a premier rock climbing and hiking destination which offers some of the most spectacular scenic beauties in the country. It rises up to a height of 3000 meters, the highest peak being the Sapitwa. It has an impressive waterfall, deep gorges and trout streams are seen in the midway, while tea plantations add to its beauty in the lush foothills.
The Zomba plateau is situated 900 meters above the Zomba city and is covered by verdant grasslands and evergreen forests. It inhabits blue monkeys, epiphytic orchids and rare montane forest birds. The Mulunguzi Dam is ideal for fishing and hiking, and the botanical gardens and the traditional market of Africa are the major points of interest in the Zomba city.

In some ways South Africa is different from the rest of Africa as there is less poverty and strife here. South Africa is home to some of the most spectacular game reserves and landscapes. Considered as the adventure capital of the world, South Africa offers many pleasures from the Gold Reef city in Johannesburg to hiking across the scenic route of N12. It is known as the rainbow nation and has a diverse range of activities to offer and places to see. One of the most popular destinations in South Africa is the Kruger National Park, which is the icon of African Safari. The Kruger National park is home to several lion prides, herds of wild elephants and thousands of other small and bid animals and birds. From spotting the elusive leopard at Sabi Sands to watching the lion pride enjoy a meal in the Mala Mala, this national park is one fairy tale ride. The Sun City and the Garden route are two attractions that you can afford to miss. The garden route is a natural theme park that is home to Dolphins and whales and if you are lucky enough, you might end up with a pearl of your own.

Mozambique is located on the south east coast of Africa and is a fine blend of African, Arabic and Portuguese cultures; a blend that makes it one of the most exotic destinations of any African safari adventure.
Premier diving location
It is a premier diving location with coral reefs and atolls literally teeming with life and colour, and it has some of the best deep sea fishing the world over. It is arguably the white sands and turquoise waters, however, that inspire dreams of a Robinson Crusoe-esque type of existence - the only difference is the trendy, upmarket, yet comparatively inexpensive, beach lodges that abound for the lazy, sun-soaking traveller on an epic African holiday.
Although the nation is still hard at work in an effort to rebuild itself after a nasty and savage civil war, Mozambique and her people are more than welcoming to tourists. Pop in at the Souk Souk, the centralised market of the port town of Pemba, and you will be astounded at the quality and craftsmanship of their locally produced arts, crafts and traditional silverware – this market also reveals the warmth and effervescence of the locals.
Mozambique is first and foremost a beach escape, and African safari specialists will guide you and your family to some of its most attractive destinations, including secluded beaches, tropical islands and coral fringed atolls.
“The Pearl of the Indian Ocean”
The Bazaruto Archipelago should be the focal point of any Mozambique tour as, apart from its natural splendours, there are plenty of unusual activities for tourists to enjoy. Take a timeless sojourn on an original Arab sailing vessel, a Dhow Safari, keeping your eyes peeled for the elusive Dugong, or simply snorkel your way around the reefs and bays of the 5 idyllic isles that make up this romantic, tropical chain.
If you have the need to emulate the great Ernest Hemingway’s character in the Old Man and the Sea and are gunning for a maritime trophy, the waters off Bazaruto offer superior Black Marlin stocks but if casting circles in the air is more enticing, why not try salt water fly-fishing where, instead of trout or bass, the sought-after bone fish is prepared for the pan.
“Where Noah parked his Ark”
Dedicated Africa tour operators will, no doubt, give visitors a brief glimpse of the rich and diverse natural wild life that is slowly recovering after the war. Gorongosa National Park was once referred to as ‘the place where Noah parked his Ark’ purely because of the abundance of wildlife and after careful conservation efforts, the animals are indeed returning ‘two by two’!
